FAQs

Can anyone call themselves a chiropractor?

No. Individuals must complete all the necessary training and gain their qualification in order to earn this title. In 1994 The Chiropractors Act was created and out of this the General Chiropractic Council (GCC) was established. All chiropractors must be registered with this independent governing body only then can they call themselves a 'chiropractor'. In order to maintain their registration, chiropractors, as with most other health professionals, must prove to the GCC that they have maintained their skills or gained more by partaking in continuing professional development (CPD).

What type of treatment do chiropractors provide?

Chiropractors treat problems with the musculoskeletal system; however they are also able to give advice on nutrition, general health and exercise. Chiropractors are renowned for the skilful administration of manipulation. Manipulation is a high speed mobilisation thrust through a stiff joint. The manipulation may sometimes result in a 'cracking' noise. This is caused by the quick displacement of gas from within the joint cavity. Manipulation is usually non-painful and is used to restore movement and normality to a stiff joint. Many studies have been performed to decide the efficacy of manipulation for joint stiffness and it has shown itself to be a worthy treatment in joint dysfunction. Chiropractors spend a minimum of four years learning and perfecting this skill as well as others such as massage, rehabilitation, postural analysis and general healthcare. Some chiropractors have chosen to complete training in other skills such as myofascial dry needling (a form of acupuncture). Evidence has shown that acupuncture may be helpful in providing relief for painful conditions such as osteoarthritis of the knee.

Is chiropractic safe?

Chiropractic is a safe and effective care when provided by a registered chiropractor. There are occasionally some minor after effects from treatment such as mild discomfort or stiffness and sometimes tiredness. However this may depend on the complaint you may have and the amount of pain that you may be presenting with. Most side effects are not long-lasting. Please discuss any worries you have with your chiropractor who will be happy to answer any other questions you may have.

Does chiropractic work?

Chiropractic has been shown to be one of the most effective forms of care for acute low back pain. It is also successful in easing the symptoms in other problems such as shoulder pain, neck pain, headaches, knee pain or stiffness.

If I don't have pain will I still benefit from chiropractic?

A lot of people benefit from regular treatments or check-ups. Usually these people have chosen to live without the stiffness or general aches that life presents us with through our work, diet or inactivity. For example, a builder who may spend the day lifting heavy materials or climbing into small spaces for long periods may find it useful to have their joints 'loosened' out every few months in order to keep supple and mobile. A sportsperson may want to keep his/her muscles stretched and relaxed for upcoming events or an office worker may find that 8 hours a day sitting at a desk requires some maintenance care to help with postural strain caused by their static lifestyle. An old injury or an arthritic hip that's not quite bad enough for surgery can benefit from occasional treatment also.
